part of the former Moldavian Republic of the
USSR (within Ukraine) and areas of Bessarabia
ceded by Romania 1940, except the area
bordering the Black Sea (added to Ukraine).
In 1988 a popular front, the Democratic
Movement for Perestroika, was formed,
campaigning for accelerated political reform.
The Moldavian language was granted official
status 1989, triggering clashes between
ethnic Russians and Moldavians in Kishinev.
In June 1990 the Moldavian parliament
declared sovereignty.
